Happy Valentine's Day!

Velvety Chocolate Dip

The day of love is upon us! If there's one thing I love more than my dogs, it's CHOCOLATE! This bittersweet bean dates back to the ancient Olmecs of 1500 B.C. where they used cacao as a ceremonial drink. They passed their knowledge of cacao to the Central American Mayans, who made chocolate drinks (hot chocolate) for celebrations and to finalize important business transactions. I think all business transactions should end in chocolate! Mayan chocolate was thick and frothy and usually contained chili peppers and honey. The Aztecs revered the precious bean, considered it more valuable than gold, and used it as currency. Cacao eventually made its way to Europe where they made their own varieties of hot chocolate, usually with cinnamon, cane sugar, and other spices. Europe is also the birthplace of chocolate houses, but only the wealthy could afford this chocolate, so the Dutch invented the machine that turned cacao beans into powder, making chocolate affordable to everyone and the ability to mass-produce. The British molded the very first chocolate bar, the Swiss duo, Daniel Peter and Henri Nestle, added milk powder and brought us milk chocolate, and Rudolf Lindt invented the machine that gave us smooth, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate. In 2020, Jacquelyn Jones brings you her recipe for a Velvety Chocolate Dip that is sure to satisfy your taste buds and get you in the mood... for more chocolate! While it's debatable that chocolate is an aphrodisiac, we know for sure that cacao is a superfood and is full of antioxidants (40x the amount found in blueberries), magnesium, iron and calcium (more than cows milk), it elevates the mood and can alleviate depression. In conclusion, eat at least 2 tablespoons of cacao a day and you will be happy and live forever :)

“Chocolate comes from cocoa, which is a tree. That makes it a plant. Chocolate is a salad.” -Unknown
